10 random facts about Spain you might wanna know for your fan work
My Hetalia hyperfixation came back this 2025 and it's stronger than ever. So to celebrate, I decided to make this post to share with you a little bit of real contemporary Spanish culture and to debunk some stereotypes. If you're writing or creating art about Spain this might help you add some details that will make the character, as well as his relationships with other nations, feel more authentic.
#1. We have two surnames, not a compound one (so it's "Fernández Carriedo", not "Fernandez-Carriedo"). I explained how that works in a post some years ago.
#2. We don't really drink sangría when we go to bars. It's considered a thing for tourists, especially considering how much they can charge you for it. Instead of that, we drink tinto de verano which is a mixture of red wine and either sparkling water or sparkling lemonade (usually the second one). When we do drink sangría, it's usually at a house or student delegation party and the methods we use to prepare it are usually not... very clean or sophisticated. It’s usually just cheap wine mixed with soda, with some chopped fruits thrown in, and it’s often made in a large plastic tub or basin without much concern for presentation or hygiene.
#3. Likewise, the dish that we like the most isn't paella, but tortilla de patatas. You'll find a plate of tortilla in every household when it's time to watch a football match, celebrate a birthday or watch the Eurovision grand final. Also, the only thing this tortilla has in common with the Mexican one is the name.
#4. The olive oil stereotype is way more accurate than the tomato one. We put olive oil in everything. Though if you wanna combine both stereotypes, most Spaniards love to have a toast with tomato pulp, olive oil and salt, either as breakfast or as a snack. The name and preparation of this toast can have slight variatons from region to region.
#5. Most Spaniards don't like bullfighting and even advocate for it to be banned. According to this survey, only 24% of Spaniards like bullfighting and it's usually those amongst the older generations. We usually consider the bullfighter stereotype to be offensive but we also think the imaginery slays (no pun intended) with fashion designers such as Palomo Spain using it in their works (this is the costume he designed for our entry in Eurovision 2022). It's kind of contradicting so take this information as you will. But basically: killing bulls, NO; pretty and shiny costumes, YES.
#6. According to a survey, Portugal (#1) and Italy (#2) are the two countries most liked by Spaniards. According to another survey, those two countries along with Greece would be the ones we'd be the most willing to help in case of a crisis. Can't tell if it's reciprocated, but according to every Spanish student's Erasmus experience ever I would say yes! (If you're not European and don't know what Erasmus is, look it up. Might be useful for a college AU). Also, there seems to be a rise in the idea of Mediterranean/southern European/PIGS pride among youths of any political inclination, often making memes like this one, which may or may not be related to the data I just provided. I'd say we consider the Portuguese to be our siblings, Italians to be our cousins (though cuanto más primo, más me arrimo jk) and Greeks to be our distant cousins.
#7. The "th" sound in the neutral European Spanish dialect (the one you hear in movies and shows) isn't a lisp, but a phenomenon linguists call diferenciación. If anyone wants me to explain this in detail, I'll gladly make a separate post about it. If you don't know how it works I suggest you don't use it in fics and stuff because we will point and laugh at you. Especially considering some provinces in Spain only pronounce the S sound, just like Latin Americans.
#8. Though Enrique Iglesias is great, he's not the most popular singer in Spain at the moment, especially since he's retired from music. Spanish girls and gays usually listen to Rosalía, Ana Mena, Lola Índigo or Belén Aguilera, amongst others. Straight people usually listen to Quevedo (ew). David Bisbal was very big in the 2000s and he's still universally loved by all, whether we actually like his music or see him as a living meme. Collaborations with Latin American artists (examples 1, 2, 3) are also very popular and collaborations with Italian artists are becoming increasingly popular (examples 1, 2, 3). I have a playlist of Spanish pop artists (mostly women) that you can check here. If your fic or artwork is set on the 20th Century, you might wanna check this playlist instead. And here's another one for Spanish classical composers.
#9. Doraemon and Crayon Shin Chan are a cultural staple amongst Spaniards raised in the late 90s-2000s-early 2010s. So much so, that there's even an episode of Crayon Shin Chan in which the Nohara family goes to Spain on vacation. I've bonded with Japanese people over this lol
#10. We typically don't use the word "gringo" to refer to USAmericans (though it's becoming more popular now since younger generations are more used to hearing Latin American slang because of both the Internet and recent migrations), we use "guiri" instead. This word is used to describe people who are whiter than us, for lack of a better explanation. So, basically, Central Europeans + Nordics + Brits + USAmericans + Canadians. Like most words in Spanish, it can be considered either a neutral descriptor or a pejorative term depending on the context and intonation. For example, if a Spaniard has an English or German partner, they may call them "mi guiri" (my guiri) as a light-hearted tease. However, if we're talking about drunk English tourists jumping from balconies... then yes, it's definitely pejorative.
I'd love it if anyone else in the fandom does this with facts about their country because I love learning new things about other cultures and peoples. So if you write a post like this, please tag me so I can read it! Also if you want me to confirm or debunk any stereotype let me know and I'll do it in the comments.
Bonus fun fact: Spain is the gayest country in Europe (based on the percentage of people that identify as LGBT+).

"hanbok wave" is the government initiative led by the culture ministry and the korea craft and design foundation. the whole goal is to create collaborative projects between hanbok designers and korean celebrities who are part of the korean wave and popular internationally, to promote the cultural heritage of hanbok and help korean designers sell in the international market. the pictures are shown in new york times square and on a big screen in paris too. the celebrities work with the designers to make their own hanbok lines that are inspired by their career/image
kim yuna participated in 2022 and it feels very modern, high-fashion, and contemporary with dynamic lines. they launched the line in london
suzy participated in 2023 and the designs are very pretty and delicate and girlish, modern in the way her fashion is feminine in a clean modest way
kim taeri was chosen as the face of the project for 2024 and she debuted in a historical film (the handmaiden) and starred in 2 historical dramas set in late joseon (mr. sunshine) and post-war korea (jeongnyeon). so she's known to look good in hanbok and have Range in pulling off rly traditional looks. the designs feel powerful and elegant with deep greens and purples and blues. the more girlish ones are also very elegant
designer hwang yiseul from leesle posted these:
it's cool that the hanbok designers in this project rly got to dig into the traditional aesthetics they love. the top one is inspired by traditional landscape paintings and also evokes joseon era buncheong pottery techniques. the bottom one references korean women's flower paintings like shin saimdang, a famous joseon artist. the designs all keep the classic hanbok shape and texture but make rly artful design choices like the tiered skirt and referencing other forms of traditional korean art

Lisa Folawiyo (Lagos, Nigeria)
Spring/Summer 2021
Lisa Folawiyo founded her eponymous brand in 2005 (at that time named Jewel by Lisa). Trained as a lawyer, Folawiyo has no formal training in fashion. She is regarded by the fashion industry as one of the founders of the contemporary African fashion scene, propelling African fashions onto the global stage. Folawiyo is known for her ready-to-wear designs made from printed cotton textiles, known in Nigeria as ankara and more widely as African-print cloth wax prints or Dutch wax prints. These have been fashionable in West and East Africa since the late 19th century, when they were produced in Europe for export to Africa. The technique used for wax print cottons was inspired by the Indonesian method of batik, where hot wax is used to draw patterns on a plain cloth before it is dyed so that the dye does not penetrate the areas covered by wax. The design process was characterised by collaboration manner, with local sellers, often women, advising merchants on popular patterns and colours. Political independence in the mid-to-late 20th century led to many African companies successfully establishing local centres of production.

Peek into the eclectic wardrobe of one of the world’s most popular singer-songwriters at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)’s latest exhibit, Taylor Swift: Storyteller, opening Saturday at Columbus Circle.
The retrospective showcases decades of Swift’s costumes, props, jewelry and other visual elements from the 12-time Grammy Award-winning musician’s prolific career, including the highly recognizable ballerina and cheerleader ensembles from 2014’s Shake it Off , the gem-adorned one-piece from 2022’s Bejeweled and the striking Nicole + Felicia red wedding dress from 2021’s I Bet You Think About Me — all selected by MAD’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design Alexandra Schwartz.
Swift’s team reached out to Alexandra after seeing the work done by fellow curator Elissa Auther with artist Machine Dazzle on his Queer Maximalism exhibit, but she admits that she wasn’t intimately familiar with Swift’s catalog prior to working on Storyteller. “I knew her big hits, but I didn’t know her work all that well,” Alexandra told W42ST. “I have learned a lot in this process — it’s been fascinating getting to see how she’s developed as an artist and in addition to her songwriting, learn that she’s such a brilliant business person who has navigated combining that songwriting and artistry with being this incredibly successful performer.”
After working on 2022’s Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art at MAD, the curator had a robust working framework with which to tackle Swift’s large catalog of designs. “In Garmenting, we were coming at it from the perspective of artists rather than designers,” said Alexandra. “I teach part-time at the Fashion Institute of Technology and I got to know fashion history and theory and learned about curating fashion through that exhibit’s experience.” She added, “I’m fascinated by how clothes are part of our culture — not just in terms of the choices that we make about what we wear, but what they mean on a broader societal level and what they say about contemporary culture.”
Swift’s reputation for integrating visual storytelling into her music videos, red carpet appearances and concerts was an inspiration and Alexandra found plenty of symbolic messaging in the songwriter’s clothing choices. ”She creates an entire world through her work,” said Alexandra. “Her videos are these very complete thought-out worlds she’s created and her performances are as well — her garments and her costumes are a huge part of that. She’s very, very intentional about what she wears in performance, how those garments help to tell a story.”
For Swift, “the element of fantasy is really important and enticing and fun — but what’s been interesting in working on this show is that she really does see all of her different creative endeavors: the videos, the design, the costumes, as a part of her songwriting and her storytelling craft as a songwriter,” said Alexandra.
Swift also loves to leave hidden messages for her notoriously eagle-eyed fanbase.”She’s famous for her Easter eggs,” said Alexandra, “and it is very interesting how she’ll refer back to other times in her career and her storytelling through her songs.” She added, “One thing that I find interesting about her, and she’s talked about this herself, is that she is very aware that as a performer, and especially as a female performer she has to always change her image to capture people’s attentions, keep them interested and keep them thinking about her music in a different way. I think a lot of her costumes and her videos show that sort of self-awareness.”
Swift’s tendency to keep fans guessing extends to her choices in designer, added Alexandra. “There are quite a few costumes by Jessica Jones, who works with many different performers,” she said, “but what she wears in performance varies. Some costumes are by couture fashion designers, like the Versace and Marchesa, but then she’ll wear faux fur jacket by Free People mixed with Louis Vuitton boots — it’s interesting to see how she combines things.”
After studying the singer’s catalog and costumes, Alexandra gained a newfound appreciation for Swift’s creative process and impact on global audiences. “Seeing the craftmanship of the costumes is incredible,” she said, “It’s a treat to see all the embroidering and decoration and beading on these pieces up close.”
As Taylor Swift: Storyteller readies for opening, Alexandra can’t wait to welcome passionate Swifties to the exhibit. “It’s going to be fascinating to see,” she replied. “It’s been great already to see the buzz about it and hear about people who are planning to come to New York to see the exhibit. I’ve just gotten to know the Swiftie community in the last couple of months and it’s intense!” she laughed. “It’s very exciting that so many fans are going to be here and I really hope they enjoy it!”

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Behind the Scenes: How Fashion Defines Each Character (PHOTOS)
by Kelli Boyle
Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey (2011-2016) [mod note: on PBS in the US], set that upstairs-downstairs series at a palatial British estate on the eve of World War I. He moved his newest costume drama Stateside to the streets of New York City. Set in the late 1800s, The Gilded Age, which has its second-season premiere on Sunday, October 29 on HBO (streaming on Max), pits the new money of railroad barons against the old money of New York society. The powerful fight for control of the city and use their wealth to measure social success. And dressing for success was its own full-time occupation.
When researching women’s fashion in 1800s New York, the show’s costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone saw one thing clearly: “Their life was a catwalk. There was this enormous excitement” when the ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Her job was to recreate that excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age.
Fashion as a Sign of Status
Who’s doing all this promenading? Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrived in NYC with no money and was taken in by her aunts Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), both living off an inheritance. Then the newly affluent Russells—headed by railroad baron George (Morgan Spector) and wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who is determined to break into polite society—moved in across the street.
Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) head to church on Easter morning in ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 premiere. Niece Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) follows close behind (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
The frill thrills continue in Season 2, especially in a pivotal garden party scene (pictured below) that TV Insider observed being filmed in September 2022 at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. (Westbury House was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie at his steel company.) On set was Fellowes, whose smart black suit and tie were the only dark hues around.

Historically Accurate Costumes
It’s a testament to the wardrobe department that the stunning colors of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Despite the sepia-toned images in history books, Walicka-Maimone says, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She has a library of more than 35,000 reference images to prove it.
“It’s shocking to our modern eye to see the explosion of color from that period,” she said. Production designer Bob Shaw (who won an Emmy for his work on Gilded Age) was present to share his creative process, which, just as Walicka-Maimone described of her own work, is “deeply steeped in history.”
Nicole Brydon Bloom joins the cast for Season 2, pictured here at the garden party with Blake Ritson’s Oscar van Rhijn (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
He does note that, when deciding between “what is correct and what feels correct,” the latter always wins. Creative liberties are taken to “build [character] histories into the costumes,” Walicka-Maimone added.
A Garden Party to Remember
Take Brit newcomers Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr) and his daughter, Frances (Matilda Lawler), for example. Nephew by marriage to Baranski’s Agnes, Dashiell requires more “toned-down” attire suitable for social outings, which contrasts with Season 1’s primarily business and formal menswear.
Aurora Fane (Kelli O’Hara) and husband Charles Fane (Ward Horton) attend the garden party in ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
Dashiell must escort Frances through society in his late wife’s absence. One consideration for Walicka-Maimone: “This is a girl who doesn’t have a mother, so there’s probably extra care from all the other family members in [dressing her],” she said.
Meanwhile, Marian, who Jacobson said is “shining this season and sees herself in [younger] Frances,” will be more open to a strategic marriage. Marian’s “not necessarily cynical” after being jilted by Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) in last season’s finale, the actress continued, but the heartbreak gives her a “spice and edge.”
Don’t count out the possibility of a romance with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), son of the railroad titan, which was teased last year. Jacobson shared: “They will definitely continue to deepen their friendship.” Old money and new money unite!

Introduction
Hello all, welcome to my little corner of the internet. I’m migrating here from my book Instagram account, which I started in 2022 and ran pretty consistently for a year. After that things were pretty touch and go as my life got chaotic and my reading dropped off. Now I’m ready to get back to making content about books and think Tumblr will be suit me much better than Instagram did (and also, fuck Meta). Very excited to find new people here and see what Tumblr has to offer.
Now, a little bit about me…
Non-bookish
- My name is Art and I’m 24, nonbinary (he/they), queer, and autistic
- For now I live in Texas and work as a restaurant shift lead, though who knows where I’ll be and what I’ll be doing in a few years
- I have an associates in piano performance and a bachelors in music composition and just love music in general. Some of my favorite bands/artists include Waterparks, Shinedown, and Halsey, while my favorite composers are Edvard Grieg and Sarah Kirkland Snider
- I love games, whether they’re video games, TTRPGs, or board games. I’m currently playing Pikmin 4 and thoroughly enjoying it
- I’m currently working on becoming a crazy plant person. So far I only have a coppertone stonecrop named Velasin but they are beautiful and precious, and I can’t wait to get more plants
Bookish
- I grew up reading but stopped once I became a teenager. Then the pandemic hit, I found booktube, and the rest is history
- My comfort genre is fantasy. It’s what I grew up reading and is always a good go-to for me. But according to my stats my most-read genres are fantasy, romance, sci-fi, and contemporary
- I love exploring new genres and types of books. I also have favorite books that are middle grade, YA, and adult, so I also read most age ranges. And when it comes to series vs standalones or long vs short books, I enjoy being able to change up what and how I’m reading so I can’t really nail down a preference
- Currently I’m most interested in exploring more horror books, manga, and self-published works
- I love books that mix fantasy and sci-fi. I haven’t read very many scifantasies but if you have any to recommend there is a 99% change I will add them to my TBR
- I am a stat goblin. I’m already looking forward to making end of year posts going over my 2025 stats. If you would like to share your reading stats with me at any point feel free and I will be so happy
- I LOVE audiobooks and deeply appreciate both skilled narrators and narrators that are well-suited to the books they’ve been assigned. I also love reading the good-ol-fashioned way, but audiobooks have a special place in my heart. At least half of my reading ends up being via audiobook, so expect to hear about them on this blog. My favorite narrators (where I’ve read at least two works narrated by them) are Vikas Adam, Gerard Doyle, Natalie Naudus, and Julia Whelan
- I have a particular interest in books that depict mental health, disability, and queerness. I read books that don’t feature these but I definitely give priority to these topics and would prefer to be far more widely-read on them than I currently am.
Feel free to ask me any questions, and if you want you can follow me on Goodreads or Storygraph, or both! Very excited to get started around here.
#it’s wild that no no I’m not coming here from tiktok i’m coming here from fucking Instagram lmao#booklr#reading#introduction#introductory post#books and reading#books#bookblr#bookworm#can’t believe I worked so carefully on this post and then published it with no tags jfc things are starting off great

For Maria Grazia Chiuri, the presentation of the cruise collection is an opportunity to follow the steps of Christian Dior around the world.
Visual journeys that each time invoke new experiences. In 1955, Monsieur Dior presented his work in Perthshire, Scotland, in the ballroom of the Gleneagles Hotel. For the Creative Director of Dior Women’s Collections, this country has become the narrative framework of the Dior cruise 2025 collection – unveiled in the gardens of Drummond Castle – where memories, inspirations and suggestions fuse to generate shapes and embroideries.
The unicorn and the thistle, both symbols of Scotland, provide an unprecedented variation of the Millefleurs motif, and are transposed into heraldic embroidery, recalling the savoir-faire of this exceptional technique, a language in itself, a form of resilience. An emblem of Mary Stuart that can be found in Clare Hunter’s book Embroidering Her Truth: Mary, Queen of Scots and the Language of Power1.
A map of Scotland adorns some of the models in this cruise line, sketching a cartography of collaborations and cultural encounters deployed specially for this défilé, such as the tribute to tartan: “It’s probably the only fancy fabric that resists fashions,” Christian Dior wrote in The Little Dictionary of Fashion2. Blending various colors and the cut of a kilt, this historic cloth, intrinsically characteristic of the region, continues to cross fashions past and present, from romanticism to punk.
Photographs from the spring-summer 1955 presentation are transformed into prints or employed as appliques on the edges of kilts or pea coats, in a kind of cinematic montage. They constitute objects of memory punctuating this Dior cruise 2025 collection.
The looks merge contrasting elements, including the diverging textures of velvet and lace dressing the contemporary equestrian. Certain silhouettes feature exaggeratedly wide sleeves which, on white shirts, appear under little dresses with gathered skirts and bustiers resplendent with embroidery. The latter can be found on several dark, iridescent pieces that are sometimes adorned with pearls. Lace collars, in their turn, brighten up the black.
Also used in very light materials, tartan is the common thread running through this veritable celebration of the kilt, whether made directly in Scotland or reinterpreted. Not to forget dresses conceived in diverse lengths, as well as coats and capes with large hoods. Rain boots come and go. Small jackets adopt the gray of menswear fabrics, and the iconic Bar jacket sports black velvet Brandenburg buttons.
This same velvet magnifies an evening gown, the fitted bust of which emphasizes the oversized skirt. Feathery woven fishnet metamorphoses into long, lightweight dresses, embracing the mauve hue of nostalgia.
This inventive choreography is made up of interconnected affinities. Like an testimony revisiting stories of earlier times, it offers a journey where the different stages become the subjects of creativity.

Odes To Mary Stuart
Inspired by Scottish craft traditions and the iconic figure of Mary Stuart, the silhouettes reinvent the look of the visionary sovereign, from romance to punk, tartan to corset-armor, dresses with accentuated shoulders to tweed sets and prodigious couture embroidery, echoing that of Holyrood Palace*. Between celebration and transgression(s), the iconic Argyle motif is unveiled in a fine open-work version; emblematic Fair Isle lace is modernized with a subtle interplay of material and transparency; crinolines are boldly revisited, punctuated by elements borrowed from counter-cultures. All these reinterpreted textile symbols marvelously revive the founding ties between France and Scotland.
* Primary residence of the kings and queens of Scotland
Punk Attitude
Poetic and all-conquering, the silhouettes designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri for the Dior cruise 2025 show are enhanced by accessories that convey a powerful, impetuous femininity. Worn with high socks, leather riding boots are adorned with zips and multiple straps, promising a confident, determined gait. Inspired by traditional sporran, kilts are worn with saddlebags emblazoned with the initials “CD”. A tribute to the customs that make Scotland so rich, the bags' shoulder straps are decorated with heraldic symbols that combine the House's emblems with those of this fascinating country. Wonderful finishing touches include necklaces with delicate black ribbons and pendants featuring marine motifs, a poetic evocation of the seas that shape the beauty of coastal landscapes.
